mapFrom Wakefield, MI to Sault Ste. Marie, MI was a really wonderful days trip.

Agate Falls

Early in our day's drive we stopped at a rest stop where there was a path to Agate Falls. It was nice that the Parks and Recreation Department in Michigan created the path so it was really easy to see the falls.

We stopped in Marquette to buy some groceries at a local Co-op and have lunch (in town not at the co-op). It was a really good meal but the service was soo slow - it took 2 hours!

Bike rack

We saw this really cool bike rack in Marquette.

Lake Superior

The next 25 to 30 miles were along side Lake Superior. I had not been to the Great Lakes since I was 5 years old. They are still really big.

Soo Locks CampgroundHere is the Soo Locks Campground where we are staying. It's quite nice with river front sites. I think you have to make reservations months in advance to get one! But, we have a corner site farther back in the park - we only have neighbors on one side.

They have a viewing area open the everyone in the park at the river's edge.

We drove to look at the locks this morning. They don't use pumps to change the water level - the water is allowed to reach it's own lever.

Boat leaving lock

We we arrived there was a tour boat in the lock. After the lock reached the level of Lake Huron (lower than Superior), it exited.

Gate closing

Here is a photo of the gate closing. Note the black crane - it is a counter weight to the gate - as the gate closes the crane comes down. When the gate is closed the crane is level with the top of the lock.

Big boat

A very large, about 1000 feet long, boat going past the RV Park on the St. Marie River.

A lot of the people staying in the RV Park fish. Here is a gentleman fishing while the boat goes past.

Second boat

A second big boat

Queen Ann's Lace

My closing flower picture; a little out of focus around the edge - but I like it!
